With World Sea Turtle Day this week, we are reminded of how crucial these amazing creatures are to our marine ecosystem and how important it is to preserve their well-being and survival. Sea turtles have been in existence for over 100 million years-- truly ancient animals who have been around since the time of the dinosaurs!
These magnificent creatures perform many essential tasks to keep the marine ecosystem running smoothly. Certain types of sea turtles feed on jellyfish and sponges, populations that need to be kept in check. Overpopulation of jellyfish, for example, poses many challenges such as the clogging up of fishermen's nets, disrupting power generation by jamming up the piping of power plants, and affecting tourism by washing up on beaches in throngs.
Needless to say, we need sea turtles to cut down on these venomous pests! Another benefit that sea turtles provide is the fact that they feed on sea grasses. When sea grasses grow out of control, they become unhealthy and unusable for various types of marine life. Sea turtles actually help trim these sea grasses by consuming them and when the sea grasses are trimmed and healthy, they are breeding grounds for various types of fish and marine life that we need to keep our food chain intact.
We can all do our part to help preserve the sea turtle population with the everyday choices we make-- recycling, reusing, reducing waste, saying no to plastic of all sorts, and participating in beach clean-ups regularly. We at Water Gallery love sea turtles and that is why we chose to feature them on our Sunset Soul Mates first edition Wyland glass water bottles.
Always keep our oceans and marine life in mind when making your daily choices!
