As we are considering a few different options for our next Water Gallery bottle images, sharks are definitely at the top of our list! Since Shark Week officially started today, Sunday, July 5th, we are thinking about these amazing creatures. Although we certainly wouldn't want to meet up with one of these guys randomly on an ocean swim, we think they get an unfairly bad reputation. Despite most people's opinions to the contrary (thanks largely to the media), sharks only tend to kill 5-15 people annually worldwide, whereas hippos, for example, kill around 3,000 people a year! And according to Discovery.com, land animals are far more dangerous to humans than sharks-- bees, wasps, hornets, snakes, and even domestic dogs are more likely to maim or kill humans than sharks. So, let's give these fascinating fish (yes, sharks are fish) a break....and not just because their brains are the size of a human thumb or because they're the only fish that can't swim backwards. Most species of sharks are actually docile creatures who are far more wary of people than we are of them and they just want to be left to live their lives under the sea, undisturbed!
Please stay connected to our blog and social media over the next month or so-- we will be posting a handful of Wyland images that we are seriously considering for the next editions of our bottles and a shark will surely be one of them! We will want your input, so get ready to weigh in. Happy Shark Week 2015, everyone!
