The amazing Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit organization formed in 1984 to protect the world's oceans and beaches from environmental damage, just celebrated its 30 year anniversary in 2014!
Started by a group of surfers who were concerned about the environmental threat over-development was was posing to their favorite Malibu, CA beach spot, the Surfrider Foundation has grown exponentially over the years and now has 84 chapters across the country. Never did this group of surfers ever dream of how far-reaching their efforts would be-- more than 250,000 volunteers and supporters across the country take part in Surfrider Foundation!
Our oceans, beaches, and waterways are in peril every day from environmental dangers-- from rubbish in our seas (especially plastic), to air pollution, to escalating coastal development, we all as residents of this country and this planet have to band together to reduce and prevent the damage that is being done to our natural world.
As we all know, there are daily choices we can make to contribute to the solution-- banning plastic and choosing reusable water bottle whenever possible, recycling every item we use that can be recycled, and just reducing in general. But we can go even further. If you visit the website www.surfrider.org, you can look up volunteer opportunities in your area-- Surfrider Foundation Chapters host waterfront/beach clean-ups monthly if not even more frequently. We can all band together for real change!
As always, reduce, reuse, recycle. Small, everyday changes make a big difference!
