Did you know that over 50% of food, yard, and kitchen waste could be saved from the landfill by composting? Composting is such a great way to reuse waste and turn it into fertilizer for your home garden! Items such as egg shells, banana peels, grass clippings, yard trimmings, apple cores, and all sorts of green vegetable waste are perfect for the compost bin.
The key is to focus on greens and browns (note that not all foods are appropriate for the compost bin-- dairy, meats, oils, and so forth are NOT compost materials) because the greens provide nitrogen and the browns provide carbon. The brown pieces are dry and the green is moist, so you need to have a balance of both to get the right carbon-nitrogen ratio.
Everyone can benefit from a compost bin in the yard on several levels-- firstly, to keep a large portion of your home waste out of the landfill and secondly, to help your garden grow!
As always, reduce, reuse, recycle! Small, every day changes can make a big difference.
