108-year-old message in a bottle washes ashore in Germany

Looks like Water Gallery isn't the first to do a "message in a bottle!"

The purported world's oldest message in a bottle was found on a German beach this past week, some 108 years after a British scientist named George Parker Bidder released it into the North Sea in order to track currents. Called "bottom bottles," Bidder designed these bottles to travel deep below the surface of the sea for the purpose of proving the the deep sea currents flow from east to west in the North Sea. Inside of each bottle was a postcard with instructions in Dutch, German, and English, requesting that whoever finds the bottle mail the postcard with details of how, when, and where the bottle was found. And so, the postcard that had been enclosed in the 108-year-old glass bottle all this time, found by a retired German mail carrier who was vacationing at the North Sea in April, was mailed as instructed and it arrived at the Marine Biological Association in London, addressed to Mr. Bidder. Unfortunately, Bidder couldn't be the one who enjoyed the surprise as he has been dead for 61 years.

This postcard was one of 1,020 that Bidder sent off into the sea between the years of 1904-1906. Most of the bottles were recovered within months of being released into the sea, so to have found this bottle over 100 years later is quite a treat. Next up? Notification that this very special message in a bottle will be entered in the Guinness Book of World Records. Heartwarming story.
