We are impressed with so many of the incredible things our licensed artist Guy Harvey has done: from his dedication towards ocean conservation, his artwork, his photography, his diving and fishing experience, and his sharp-as-a-tack business acumen, he is beyond multi-talented.
But one of his most recent endeavors has us at Water Gallery truly wowed. Guy Harvey recently partnered with Norwegian Cruise Line to display his eye-catching artwork on the hull of their newest ship! This particular ship, called the Norwegian Escape, is a massive beauty, spanning more than 1,000 feet from bow to stern-- the largest ship so far in the company's history.
The ship features a classic Guy Harvey marine life scene, showcasing his signature sailfish along with whale sharks, stingrays, sea turtles, and a myriad of tropical fish.
Since we are always looking to learn about how incredible art can be transferred to mediums beyond a canvas that hangs on the wall, it was fascinating for us here at Water Gallery to learn about the process of creating the artwork on the ship. It was a complicated, drawn-out process for us to learn how to create bottles that feature artwork without changing or marring the artwork in any way; we can't image how daunting a task it was to create art on a humongous cruise ship!
The process starts with a laser that projects the artwork onto the hull of the ship, after which a team outlines the art onto the rounded hull, pencilling in the lines and preparing for the hand-application of the paint (imagine how labor intensive that must have been, not to mention the precision it required!).
"We had great expectations for this artwork, which reflects the marine life of the spectacular waters on which the ship will sail," said Andy Stuart, president and COO of Norwegian Cruise Line. "Guy's vision for Norwegian Escape's signature artwork is the perfect complement to everything this ship stands for." We could not agree more!
This beautiful ship represents everything we admire in Guy Harvey, from his passion for the ocean, his remarkable artistic talent, and his amazing ability to transfer his art onto more practical canvases (from ships to t-shirts and even to our Water Gallery glass water bottles and drinkware!). Kudos to Guy Harvey and Norwegian Cruise Line for this exciting partnership. Maybe someday we'll be lucky enough to sail away on the Norwegian Escape ourselves.
