This is one of the coolest opportunities ever! A California non-profit called Nurtured by Nature is the dream-come-to-life of husband and wife Kevin and Wendy Yates. They turned hardship into giving back after wildfires destroyed their home.
Touched by the incredible outpouring of love and help they got after their own personal devastation, Kevin and Wendy decided to create Nurtured by Nature "to provide solace in times of misfortune or trouble." This is a facility wherein guests can feed, touch, and interact with animals of all sorts, such as kangaroos, hedgehogs, armadillos, horses, and more.
But arguably the most magical experience you can have with this program is the opportunity to swim with sea otters! There's a whole section on the Nurtured by Nature website all about these adorable otters, explaining various things about them.
We actually learned a lot about them from the website, including facts such as they do not make good pets because they are actually very aggressive, emotional animals, but when they are stimulated and entertained, they are playful and fun. It's worth exploring their website to learn more. All of the animals at the facility are either surplus from zoos, part of a conservation program, or rescues from the wild.
The most meaningful aspect of the Nurtured by Nature program is the fact that while visitors pay for their time with the animals, a large portion of the proceeds goes to allowing ailing children from the Make-A-Wish Foundation to visit the animals for free. Every time someone pays for one of these incredible animal encounters, he or she is giving back to kids who deserve the chance to spend time there, too.
And the remainder of the profits goes to caring for the animals. The swimming with otters experience is completely booked through 2016-2017, so needless to say this is in high demand. If you or your loved ones are interested in one of their animal encounters, you should definitely check their website frequently for openings-- guaranteed to be a rewarding experience that gives back to an amazing cause!
