As designers of artistic glass drinkware, several of which feature sea turtles, we are huge lovers of these incredible creatures. Since many types of turtles and tortoises are endangered, it's so important for all of us to keep them in mind on a daily basis.
Although one day is certainly not enough, turtles and tortoises are honored on World Turtle Day, which began in the year 2000 and is sponsored yearly by American Tortoise Rescue, intending to bring knowledge, awareness, and respect to the more than 300 species of turtles and tortoises worldwide.
Why are turtles and tortoises so special? Well, firstly because of their awe-inspiring diversity. From sea turtles, which can travel thousands of miles to lay their eggs on the beaches they were born, to the American Box Turtle who can live for over a hundred years, from the tiny Bog Turtle which is only 4 inches long, to the Leathery Turtle which can weigh up to 1500 pounds...the variety amongst the various species is truly amazing.
Turtles live on every continent except for Antarctica and they have outlived almost every other species of reptile that has ever existed. Many scientists attribute that fact to their unique shells, which are made up of over 60 bones all connected together.
Unfortunately, human beings have posed a profound threat to the continued existence of turtles and tortoises. In many cultures around the world, turtle is a staple in the human diet. The desire to consume turtle meat (particularly in turtle soup) has led to the overhunting of these precious creatures.
Destruction of turtles' habitats has been disastrous for their survival, including beaches and freshwater swamps encroached upon by humans (and often littered with toxic plastic rubbish). Nearly 3 dozen turtle species are considered rare or endangered, many of which fall under the category of our beloved sea turtles.
How can we protect turtles and tortoises on a daily basis?
1) Stop using single-use plastic, which often ends up in our oceans and waterways, and subsequently threatens many species of turtles.
2) Be careful when on the beach not to disturb a turtle mother's nest (in particular, avoid beach bonfires during nesting season).
3) Minimize beach lighting at night, such as flashlights, which can disorient nesting mothers.
4) Stay alert when boating or jet skiing so as not to hurt one of these precious creatures.
